Portrait commission

Example of a commissioned drawing by Atlanta Weiss

Commissioning a portrait is a unique, rewarding and valuable experience. Being previously a privilege for the very few, it is nowadays a luxury available to a wider audience. Atlanta Weiss creates eternal masterpieces to enjoy for many generations to come. There are many private and official occasions to capture a person and to honour their achievements. A commissioned portrait is not only a token of love or esteem, but it can also be a great work of art and a legacy for the future.

Atlanta combines classical academic representational principle with her own aesthetics and understanding of the virtues and dignity. She prefers to get to know her sitter(s) in person to grasp their character and how they interact with the world. During the meeting she drafts the composition and takes photographs of the details before starting studio work. If a personal meeting with the sitter is not possible, Atlanta works with photographs provided by the client.

PRIVATE OCCASIONS

It might be for welcoming a new family member or a wedding gift accompanying a start of your family.  It might also be a farewell of a beloved person.  Parents capture those joyful childhood memories before children grow up or reward them for accomplishing a degree. Families hand-over a portrait to the next generation, which strengthens the link between the young and the forefathers.

On a social level, a commissioned portrait sets the stage in your social circle, underlining your cultured upbringing, resonating with your establishment in the society and your aspiration to strive for excellence.

OFFICIAL OCCASIONS

With a representative portrait of the founder or executive board members, a corporation or institution demonstrates that you have a tradition of value and quality.

In the boardroom or along the corridors it showcases a smart investment and a corporate culture with a value system putting people first.  In institutions it honours an exceptional performance of a member, be it member of parliament, a judge or a professor.  Moreover, a commissioned portrait is one of the best presents to mark a career step or the way into retirement.

At the end of the day, investing in a portrait is investing in a value and joy for generations to come.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Contact me using the form below or email to studio@atlantaweiss.art.  I will get back to you to talk through the details. If you already have a photograph you would like me to use, check with me if it is something I can work with.  You will also receive a full list of options which you can choose from. I am here every step of the process if you need any recommendation or explanation.

Once you made your decision, you will receive a contract to confirm all details and the price. With your signature and deposit payment (50 % of the price) the creative journey of commissioning a portrait starts. The deposit compensates for my time and materials to start with the portrait.

Atlanta prefers to get to know her sitter(s) in person to grasp their personality and their view of the world.

If a personal meeting with the sitter is not possible, I work with photographs you provide. In this case, I recommend to send me a selection of your favourite photographs I can choose from. Photographs only capture a fraction of personality and for a painted portrait it is important to get an idea of the model’s full personality.

You are welcome to hold the first sitting in my studio where I take the pictures I need to create your portrait. My studio is located in Cologne, Germany.

Alternatively, I can also travel to your preferred location to capture the model in a suitable environment. Discretion and confidentiality are as important to me as they are to you.

As a final alternative, you can ask your nearest family or friends to take several pictures I can choose from.

Yes, I travel to clients world-wide.

My studio is based in Cologne, Germany.  If you would like me to depict the model on a different location, I am happy to travel to your preferred place.

I am travelling Germany-wide, Europe-wide and world-wide. Travel and accommodation is paid by the client.

The making time depends on the size of the artwork, number of people depicted and the workload in my studio.

It can take from 3 – 6 weeks for a DRAWING and 1 ½ – 9 months for a PAINTING. Particularly the oil paint has many layers that take weeks to dry during the process. There is also an extra drying time after the final varnish before being shipped.

If you have a preferred date for a handover (e.g. birthday, anniversary, inauguration) let me know before you place your commission.

The size of the artwork, medium, and the number of figures in a portrait will contribute to its cost.  As a starting point, a single head pencil DRAWING on a 50 x 65 cm Fine Art paper starts at €500. A single head portrait in traditional OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING same size 50 x 65 cm starts at €3.500. A family portrait of 5 people in OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING life size 200 x 200 cm could be in the regions of €35,000. With such a wide range it makes sense to set yourself a budget ceiling before completing your brief.

A payment of 50% of the commission price is required at the time of the first sitting. This payment is non-refundable in order to compensate for the artist’s time and materials to start with the portrait. The remaining balance is paid upon completion and handover of the portrait.

Framing, shipping costs and travel expenses are in addition to the price of the portrait.
